Over the last couple of years I’ve tried some Fox Contrabassoons and I was always very impressed about the sound quality and the stability of the instrument. When I got the chance to try the new Model 920 last year in Zürich, I directly decided to order a new instrument and when Tony Starkey from Fox Products came to Amsterdam to deliver my new Fox contrabassoon Model 920 half a year later, I was overwhelmed.
We tried it in the Kleine Zaal of the Concertgebouw that Sunday morning, with my colleagues of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra listening in the hall and it was clear from the beginning : this new Model 920 was something special! It had a rich and open sound, was easy to play, had a very precise keywork and was extremely well balanced through the 3 octaves. I was so convinced of it, I decided to play a concert with my orchestra on it that same afternoon. (Mahler 2nd symphony with Live Radio)
Two weeks later Tony, who was still in Europa, came to listen to a recital of Gustavo Nuñez in the Kleine Zaal of the Concertgebouw where we also played a piece for Bassoon, Contrabassoon and string quintet by Dutch composer Kees Olthuis and this concert was the beginning of great friendship with Tony and Fox Products who have been welcoming me with lots of kindness and professionalism in their firm in South Whitley, where they are working extremely hard and are very much involved in making the instruments even better.
